Slave to the Ribbon 4 Tough Questions in Software Design At MeisterLabs, we did our first usability test last year on our mind mapping product, MindMeister.     As a team that focuses on designing attractive and easy-to-use software, the test was an eye-opening experience. It forced us to think long and hard about our software design philosophy and presented  four  tough questions  that SaaS designers have to answer, one way or another: 1.  Where Do You Land on the Snapchat-Word Continuum? Part of the usability test involved eye-tracking software that allowed us to see what parts of the interface people were looking at. Despite all the innovations in software design and UX that weve seen over the last years, it quickly became apparent that when people get stuck in software, they invariably look up. As in: they are checking the place where Microsoft Word or Outlook typically have a big multi-tab collection of text elements, icons and random drop down menus, also known as The Ribbon. This, of course, means every software designer needs to make a choice about where they want to position themselves, choosing to be either: on the Snapchat end of the continuum, where users are supposed to figure things out and need to remember the secret combos that unlock certain pages and functionalities or, on  the Microsoft end of things, where elements are expectedly found at the top of the interface.   Affordances and signifiers In the more scientific terms of Don Normans classic The Design of Everyday Things, this is the battle between affordances (the implicit qualities of a product that allow it to be used) and the signifiers (the interface elements that inform the user explicitly where they can push, pull, click or dial). Industrial designers have decades of experience in frustrating users by hiding signifiers because they find minimalism more beautiful. How Does Your Interface Grow with the User? Then there’s the opposite problem: how do you avoid a software design that is too simple for advanced users? It’s quite clear that your software needs to be easy to understand for beginners. In the app industry, we know that 84% of users wont return to an app  for a third try if the first two experiences were glitchy or unsuccessful. In order to retain users, you have to nail that first experience. But new users will quickly become more sophisticated and  want to do more. Weve found that our MindMeister users soon want to embellish their mind maps, by: adding images presenting their content to others sharing their content online creating links between their content. Maybe they like your software so much that theyll find use cases that push your interface to its very limits. This is a good problem to have, no doubt, but still a challenge we need to solve. It also presents  probably the hardest question for a software designer: How can I design software that meets the user with functionality at exactly the right moment in their customer journey? This remains one of the biggest challenges for me personally: when you’re working on an app for more than a decade, the temptation can arise to complicate things â€" and potentially  overcomplicate them. Advanced Mode isnt the answer One thing I do know is that software with different modes or states, like the “Advanced” or “Editing Mode” that you find in some apps, are not the answer. In my previous job, I had to help users with software systems. My first question was always: Please tell me what mode your system is in? People never knew the answer to that â€" they always needed to search for the answer at length, guided by more probing questions from me. We launched MindMeister in 2006 and haven’t stopped  perfecting our interface ever since. Weve tried it all â€" the bare bones look at the beginning to the hyper-gloss phase a few years back.   A design draft of MindMeister for iOS on iPad Of course, now, we want to make the tool as streamlined as possible, for both our web and mobile apps, and we’re going back to basics by focusing on our users’ content. 3. What is the Reward? This is one question that you need to be able to answer clearly whether you launched your product yesterday or youve been on the market for ten years. In his bestselling book Hooked, entrepreneur and design expert Nir Eyal tries to explain how some companies create products that you just can’t put down. The golden standard are of course products like Facebook, which  studies have proven our brain wants to check every 31 seconds. What is it that makes you fall in love with these products? One of the main attractions of truly “habit-forming” products, Eyal concludes, is that they reward the actions they trigger. Rewards can be anything. The only thing really required is that your user experiences a small, almost imperceptible boost of satisfaction. Imagine the feeling you get when you finish assembling a piece of IKEA furniture. For example, Eyal  points out that LinkedIn provides users with reward when they input more details about themselves into the professional networking platform. A graphic pops up that illustrates how close to complete your profile is, building incentive in users to finish what they’ve started. When you’ve provided enough information, LinkedIn lets you know that your profile has reached “All-Star” status. Eyal says that the graphic increases the likelihood of users opening a premium account and thus launching into the investment phase.   Knowing your products reward will allow you to reduce the time your user needs to get that very first boost and reducing your time to wow will increase the likelihood of bringing the user back a second time. 4. Are You Future Proof? Finally, theres the question: How will we survive the onslaught of new technologies that launch every day? Augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence (the list goes on …) will change how users interact with content: they’ll be able to verbally access information (no more UI required!) and experience it in 3D (UI everywhere around you!). One main difference will be that the workspace will include the entire field of vision rather than a 24-inch slice of it. But that will probably be compensated partly by the fact that hand gestures aren’t as granular as the pointer of a mouse. Though these classes are kept in a mystified state to govern and maintain their power, they held over the other classes. Like Berger’s art historian Agent Smith in The Matrix promotes mystification and reproduction as an act of conforming history to serve the machines and their false world. The false world maintains the structure of classes in society in both Berger’s and The Matrix. With the change of perspectives, one can bring change to reality and history, one free reproduction and an oppressed society made by mystification. With that said, Hope Reeves questions, â€Å"whether life is real or an illusion and who is responsible for the actions of individuals people themselves or some higher power?† (18) In The Matrix, the AI needed the code that Morpheus had for the human underworld (Zion) where the humans lived unconnected from the machines. Berger sounded t he alarm about the upper class and its systems of manipulating the masses by using humans as fuel for reproduction. And this reproduction is a tool in itself because it allows the individual to assume a fake part in the decision making. But as Agent Smith character would demonstrate, one is part on the Supremacist tracking devices of machines. Some say that it was because of Athens’ own instability following the Peloponnesian War and the occupation of Sparta. During this time (about 399 BC), Athens was experiencing major setbacks, both economically and politically following a long period of prosperity and power. Others believe that Socrates was punished because, like all aforementioned martyrs, he spread his way of thinking to anyone who would listen. He pestered the city with his philosophies, as the â€Å"gadfly that stings the sluggish horse,† attempting to bring the city to his own enlightenment (738). It was because of this circulation of radical views that the people became incensed. The traditional Athenian religious views had been established hundreds of years before, so perhaps it was understandable that they were aggravated enough to sentence Socrates to death. In his Apology, Socrates lays out the various different accusations made against him. First he expounds on informal, ancient charges made against him in the form of prejudice by many of his peers. These charges are summed up â€Å"in an affidavit: ‘Socrates is an evil-doer, and a curious person, who searches things under the earth and in heaven, and he makes the worse appear the better cause, and he teaches these doctrines to others’† (729). These charges are not the formal charges and reason for the trial. However, they serve a purpose: to show that the people of Athens were previously biased against Socrates for his studies and recitations. In reaction to the charge of â€Å"making the worse appear the better,† he accuses his accusers of practically the same thing. He accuses them of making the morally weak argument appear to be the better argument. He indicts those people of conformity to the prejudices against him as their only reason for believing him to be of evil. He urges the people present for his defense to listen to those who believe he is innocent. This, I believe, is a very weak movement. It is as if he were to say, â€Å"I am innocent because these people believe I am. † Socrates’ formal charges were only two: first, he is accused of impiety, of disbelief in the accepted gods of Athens, and the introduction of new â€Å"divinities of his own†. His defense of this charge is quite weak. He brings up the oracle of Delphi, which plays a very important role in the world of the Greeks (which we know from various other works of literature). Chaerephon, a friend of Socrates, went to the oracle and inquired as to whether any man possessed more wisdom than Socrates. The response was that of â€Å"there is no man wiser† (730). When he heard this, Socrates immediately set about a search to find a wiser man than he. In doing so, he not only irritates and insults many of Athens’ most intelligent and powerful scholars, he almost proves his charge of impiety. In this case, Socrates is attempting to prove the oracle wrong. The Athenians believed that the oracles were never wrong, because they were gods and goddesses. To accuse one of falsehood was to accuse a god of ungodliness. In his speech, Socrates makes it seem as though the oracle at Delphi gave him a sort of challenge, a charge to find a man wiser than himself. However, this was not the case. This is simply another weak link in his argument. Meletus’ second charge against Socrates is the corruption of the youth. In one of his most intelligent strikes, Socrates summons Meletus, and makes a fool of him in front of the judges and jury. As all good lawyers are capable of doing, Socrates provokes Meletus and prods him into a corner from which he has no graceful way to escape. Thus he shifts the attention from himself onto the ridiculousness of Meletus’ propositions. Socrates also defends himself in this charge by saying simply that the young men of Athens need to be able to make up their own minds. He says that the children come to him of their own accord, because they want to learn, and Socrates will teach more effectively and relentlessly than the other conformist teachers. To the Athenian mind, the majority of his arguments are weak and unsubstantiated. Socrates rarely addresses the actual charges made against him, and never in a way that would effectively make this particular court rule in his favor. However, he is of the opinion that there is something morally wrong with â€Å"procuring an acquittal instead of informing and convincing† the judge and jury (741). In this case, he remains true to himself and his own values throughout his entire life, even when found guilty and sentenced to death. He comments that he would â€Å"rather die having spoken after my manner, than speak in your manner and live† (744). Socrates did not fear death. As he said, â€Å"no evil can happen to a good man, either in life or after death† (746). He even speaks words of comfort about his death to the judges and people of Athens. I think this is yet another testimony of the moral strength of his character. Thus, even though it is the natural instinct of man to defend himself, to do almost whatever it takes to avoid death, Socrates does so in a way that he remains true to himself and to those whom he has taught. One might say that his defense was ineffective due to the outcome, but his very lack of desperation in doing so would have changed my mind if I had been in that court.
